Checkers seems like a simple game, but it has surprising strategic depth. Advanced players think 5-6 moves ahead.
Pieces in the center of the board have more mobility and options than pieces on the edges. Occupy the central squares and force your opponent to the sides.
Keep your pieces grouped in a pyramid formation. A lone piece is vulnerable; a piece with companions on the sides is protected against captures.
Sometimes losing a piece on purpose wins the game. If sacrificing one piece lets you capture two of your opponent's on the next move, it's a profitable exchange. Look for these capture chains.
A crowned piece (king) is worth double because it moves in both directions. If you have numerical advantage, force crownings. If you're behind, block your opponent's crowning routes.
Pieces on the last row can't be captured from behind. If you need to defend, retreat pieces to the edge. But don't stay there forever — passive pieces lose games.
